Go With The Flow

During University I had 4 3 week long briefs towards the end of my final year. One of the briefs I chose was called 'Plastic-less Packaging'.

The Brief: With sewage related debris polluting our oceans and shores increasingly every year, what can done to reduce sanitary waste consisting of plastics? Design a range of sanitary protection products that can reduce waste by containing biodegradable/recyclable materials and encouraging more recycling to take place in the bathroom.

Through my research I discovered that household recycling habits are contributors to the plastic waste issues that are prominent throughout our seas. For example; while 90% of packaging is recycled in our kitchens, only 50% is being recycled in the bathroom (BBC, 2017).

Pulling the focus onto necessary products that are used in the bathroom, I spotlighted menstrual products, as they are typically made from plastics that are rarely recycled due to the public using toilets as a 'wet bin'. An estimated 1.5 to 2 billion items of sanitary protection are flushed every year in the UK (Marine Plastics Pollution Policy and Position Statement, 2013).

The resulting product is one I have titled 'Go With The Flow'. It is a 100% recyclable product that is a monthly subscription service designed to slot through your letterbox to reduce hassle for the customer, including packaging that becomes a bin - with included jute bin-liner which biodegrades in compost environments.
